Lessons from the Green: How Golf's Challenges Align with the Entrepreneurial Journey ⛳

About 3 years ago, I took up golf. My love for nature, physical activity and socializing pulled me out to the golf course and it’s been a part of my life since. 🏞️

I love it, yet it challenges me on more levels than I ever imagined. 😅 It reminds me of being an entrepreneur and building a business. 💼

​

When I look at my business it reminds me of a golf course. It’s got unexpected challenges and unpredictable, ever-changing terrain. 📈⛰️

​

With every golf shot there needs to be an intention, focus and a clear mind. Same with every action in business. 💡

​

I’ve heard a quote: “As in golf, as in life.” It could be “As in golf, as in entrepreneurship.”

​

🌟 As I‘ve thought about the challenges I’ve faced as an entrepreneur, I’ve noticed that golf has mirrored some of those challenges. There’s valuable lessons to be learned from each one. 🧠🎓

Just as a golfer's first swing sets the tone for the game, our first steps into the business world set the tone for our entrepreneurial journey.

Navigating obstacles seems to be one of the things that parallels the most.

​

Every golf shot presents unexpected obstacles in the form of bunkers, water hazards, rough patches and on my home course I’ve even seen a coyote pick up a golf ball on the fairway and lay down with it in the shade like a dog with a tennis ball.

​

That was definitely unexpected. 🐕⚽️

​

These obstacles test our skills, expertise, and creativity. We need to be strategic in our next shots.

​

Similar to golf, business is filled with daily obstacles from big global crises like a pandemic to financial hurdles, employee challenges, or Facebook ad accounts being shut down in the middle of a launch.

​

All these situations take problem-solving skills, expertise, creativity, strategy, and being courageous enough to take an action into the unknown.

​

Whether it’s golf or business, with each obstacle we overcome, we become more resilient, smarter, stronger, and develop more confidence to handle whatever obstacles come next. 💪🔥

Golfers plan a strategy for each shot to position themselves for success.

​

Likewise, entrepreneurs must create comprehensive business plans that lay out their goals and strategies.

​

Just as a golfer adapts their game to weather and the lie of the ball, business owners are constantly pivoting and adapting their plans to the ever-changing business landscape. 🌦️📜

When a golfer approaches the final hole, the pressure is on to make that last crucial putt. Similarly, in business, the pressure is on to close deals, achieve milestones, and celebrate the wins. 🎯🥳

The determination required to stay focused until the last moment can make all the difference whether we reach our goals or not. 🎖️

When I started in business, I could never have imagined the journey I would be taking.

​

And when I started golf, I never imagined how challenging it really is.

​

Both have tested me to my limits and created opportunities for personal growth.

​

And, I never get bored with either one of them because there’s always room for improvement and there’s always new challenges. 📈🏌️‍♀️
